Enjoy this year’s selection of films and anime using Scener’s watch party platform

Throughout Comic-Con@Home 2020, Scener will be hosting watch parties where you can connect with other con-goers over films and anime that you love. Scener’s watch party platform allows you to view all of this year’s screenings in-sync with your fellow attendees, while chatting.

With a packed screening schedule, featuring classics such as, ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’, and new hits like ‘Knives Out’, you’ll be able to watch your favorites with people who share your interests, and connect with new friends along the way.

Visit the schedule below to see the full line-up, and RSVP to the screenings you plan to attend. More screenings will be announced in the coming days.

And for members of the press, here’s the press kit.

How it Works

Scener syncs the viewing experience of all viewers in the watch party, so you can watch, share, and react in real-time. You can even host your own watch parties with your friends, both old and new, using Scener. With Scener’s video-chat feature, you can hop on camera with up to 10 friends while watching together in a private theater, or broadcast your watch party to a public audience. With support for Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Prime Video, Funimation, and Vimeo, you can watch just about anything with anyone. Download the free Scener extension, and get the watch party started.

Welcome to the new Virtual Movie Theater

From day one, our mission here at Scener has been to bring people together over the shows and movies they love.

Now, more than ever, people are looking for ways to stay connected. Because of that, we’ve had a huge increase in users who are interested in what Scener has to offer. All of those new eyes have given us tons of valuable feedback on making Scener smoother, more accessible, and more fun. Consider yourselves heard.

Introducing the all-new
Virtual Movie Theater

The new and improved Scener Virtual Movie Theater is not just an upgrade. It’s a next-level movie night experience. It’s not just a Netflix party. It’s a movie theater living inside of your laptop. So grab your popcorn, and let’s dive into what sets Scener – Virtual Movie Theater apart.

Massive Sync and Stability Upgrades

Faster sync and improved stability make this the smoothest, most reliable iteration of Scener yet. That means that you can enjoy watching shows and movies with your friends without interruption. Whether you’re looking to catch a quick episode together, or buckling in for a marathon binge session, Scener Virtual Movie Theater ensures that you don’t miss a thing. No hassle, no stress, just shows and movies together.

Easy-to-Share Theater Codes

Every time you kick off a private theater, you’re given a unique 6-digit Theater Code. Send your code to friends to invite them. They’ll be able to punch in your code as soon as they open Scener Virtual Movie Theater, and join you immediately. If links are more your speed, you’ll also be provided with a link to your private theater. Share it with friends, and they’ll jump straight into your theater as soon as they click it. Getting movie night started has never been easier.

Support for Global Users

We’ve gone worldwide! Scener Virtual Movie Theater makes it possible for people outside of the US to watch shows and movies together. Our vision has always been bigger than a single country. We want people from all over the world to be able to watch their favorite shows with their favorite people. So go ahead and invite that friend overseas to watch with you. One person’s movie night is another person’s movie morning 😉

New Non-Intrusive Layout

Our new video squares put you and your friends inside of the Scener sidebar, and out of the way of what you’re watching. No more minimizing your video circles to try to get a full view of the movie. Your friends are now neatly nestled into video squares to the side, so you can see both them and the movie better than ever. This change also helps us keep things stable and smooth – something so many of you have asked for.

Watch From Any Netflix Profile

The old Scener only let you watch together while using the primary profile of your Netflix account. Scener Virtual Movie Theater fixes that problem, so you can watch together from any Netflix profile. That means you’re good to go for movie night whether you’re Mom, Dad, Daughter, Son, or Doggo.

Out of Your Way

Every now and then, you just want to watch something alone. In those moments, hopping onto Netflix and having Scener pop up automatically can be annoying. We’ve rebuilt our interface to always be there for you when you need us, but out of your way when you just want to watch something alone. Whenever you’re ready to get movie night started again, simply click the Scener Virtual Movie Theater icon at the top of your Chrome toolbar, and you’re ready to go.

More Streaming Platforms (soon)

One of the most exciting things about the new product we’ve created is the opportunity that it creates to use more of your favorite streaming platforms beyond Netflix. While it wasn’t feasible with the old extension, Scener Virtual Movie Theater makes it possible to bring your favorite shows and movies from other streaming platforms into the fold. Movie night is about to get real!

We are incredibly excited for the amazing possibilities that we are able to bring to life with Scener Virtual Movie Theater. We also know that change can be scary. For those of you who have been with us from the beginning, first of all, thank you! We understand it may be a bit strange for you to open Scener and see something completely new. We hope you’ll dive in, and find (as we have) that Scener Virtual Movie Theater stays true to all of the best things about Scener, while offering new, exciting tools to make your virtual movie nights amazing.

We can’t wait to hear what you think of Scener Virtual Movie Theater. This whole product was created with your feedback in mind, so always know that we hear you. Scener is as much yours as it is ours. Give it a try, and e-mail us at to let us know what you think, or just to say “hi”.

Long live movie night.

Scener Help & FAQ

Scener was recently upgraded to work more reliably during the lockdown, where many users have been using the product to stay connected.

Please make sure you and any friends you’re trying to use Scener with have updated to the latest extension. Scener will only work if you’re all updated. To do this go to Chrome Preferences -> Extensions, and press ‘Update’ next to Scener, or quite and reopen Chrome.

The first thing you should try whenever you encounter an issue is closing tabs and apps you’re not using, or reloading your browser. Scener is relatively intensive on your computer, as it combines streaming shows with video chat.

If you’re still having issues, here are some top problem-solving tips:

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I invite my friends?

Every time you kick off a private theater, you’re given a unique 6-digit Theater Code. Send a link with your code in it, or the code directly to friends to invite them. They’ll be able to punch in your code as soon as they open Scener and join you immediately. You can reuse codes, or create new ones. It’s a bit like joining a Zoom call. You must be on the newest version of Scener for this to work.

The video isn’t loading! Help!

Sometimes websites store a lot of unnecessary data and it can slow down webpages. Let’s clear your Chrome browser cache.

  1. In Chrome, you can click the vertical ellipses, and click on settings. Alternatively, type this into your browser: chrome://settings2a
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on Advanced.2b
  3. This will give you more settings to explore, so under the Privacy and security tab, click on clear browser data. Alternatively, you can go to: chrome://settings/clearBrowserData2c
  4. From here, you can select Cached images and files (see image below) and Cookies and other site data. However, first try clearing your Cache alone, then if it doesn’t solve the issue, Cookies can be deleted too, but please note that clearing Cookies will sign you out of many websites, so you might want to change the time range to last 7 days if you are concerned about this.2d

My friends say they're in the theater but I can't see them... what's going on?

Sometimes when several people join a theater, Scener upgrades to allow more people to be together simultaneously. Occasionally, this can result in you being in the room without other friends. To remedy this, press the hang up button and rejoin the theater from your sidebar home area.

Why can't I see what my friends are watching?

In the new version of Scener, only people in the Theater can see what is being watched by the host. It’s no longer possible to see what your friends at watching if you’re not in a theater. We’re thinking about ways to give you suggestions for what to watch, but believe this strikes a good balance with user privacy. If you want to watch with friends, create a Private Theater, and share your Theater Code with them.

How do I use full screen?

On Mac:
1. Click full screen in your Netflix window
2. Press the [Control] + [Up] keys
3. You’ll see your Netflix window at the top of your screen. Click and drag your Scener sidebar into the Netflix window.

On Windows:
1. Click full screen in your Netflix window
2. Press [Alt] + [Tab] and select Scener

My audio or video isn't working

Did you accidentally deny Scener access to audio or video? Is your audio or video not working or showing up? It happens. Try these steps below to allow for audio and video permissions.

  1. For Macs, click Chrome from the navigation bar at the top of your screen, and select Preferences. For Windows, type this into your search bar: chrome://settings1a
  2. Scroll to the bottom and click Advanced.1b
  3. Under Privacy and Security, click on Site Settings.1c
  4. Under Permissions, click on Camera (if issues with video) or click on Microphone (if issues with audio).1d1e
  5. Make sure the audio/video source you want is selected.1f1g
  6. If you denied permissions for Google Chrome to access Scener, press the trash can icon under the Block tab and delete it from your blocked sites.
  7. Reload page, and accept permissions this time.1h1i

Where did my group go?

In the home screen of your Scener sidebar, you’ll see all of your recent Theaters. Click “Join” to jump back in. Can’t find it? You can always create a new Private Theater, and share your new Theater Code with friends whom you want to watch with. Once you’re done with a Theater, recent ones will appear in the sidebar.

What are the software requirements?
All you need to get started is a Netflix subscription and the Google Chrome web browser for desktop or laptop. Systems with more memory and processing power can handle bigger video call sessions more reliably, so you may want to ask friends to disable their cameras if things slow down for you.

What equipment do I need?
To watch with friends on Scener, you’ll need a laptop and headphones. We recommend you use headphones if others are around and you’re trying to be a good roommate. Or if you don’t want an echo. echo. echo.

How many people can I have in a Theater?
Theaters can have up to 20 users concurrently watching. When you jump from a couple of viewers to have more friends join, the sidebar may reload and ask you to enable your camera again. This is normal – we’re automatically upgrading your experience to ensure it works reliably.

Who controls the Theater?
The person who creates the Theater gets a remote and can control the content being played. Having the remote allows them to set and pause the content in the Scene. However, they can pass the remote around and let others take control of the Theater.

Can I pause the movie for everyone?
In order to provide the smoothest, most harmonious sync experience, only the person holding the remote can control pause/play functions. The Theater leader can pass the remote to whomever they want, by clicking on the remote icon, and clicking on a friend’s name.

How do I log in with Facebook?
No need! We’ve made it simpler than ever to use Scener. When you first get Scener, you’ll be asked to enter your name and e-mail address, and then you’re good to go.

Something seems out-of-sync, what do I do?
The browser refresh button is your best friend. Click it, and see if that does the trick.
